New shop helps fuel city’s caffeine needs

Matthew Ramsey pours a hand-poured coffee at the debut of Denim Coffee Company’s Harrisburg shop.

Although Covid put a wrench in Denim Coffee Company’s plans — as it did to so many others, too — to open five locations in five years, the Shippensburg-based roaster’s planned Harrisburg opening for this coming Monday (May 3) keeps it close to on-track with three shops in four years. Owner Matt Ramsey previewed the cozy, high-tech, white, gray, and denim colored shop at the corner of Walnut and 4th streets today.

You want a hand poured coffee, they will make it with precision? A cappuccino or latte? A weighted surface for the milk pitcher signals the through-the-bar milk dispenser to emit the perfect amount of milk that will be steamed for your coffee drink.

They also offer cold drinks, teas, hot chocolate, and a full espresso bar along with some killer scones created in-house at their roasting facility in Shippensburg.

The Shippensburg University grad opened the first shop in Carlisle, then expanded to the square in Chambersburg, but wanted the third location to be in a city.

“We’re stoked to be in Harrisburg. It’s our state’s capital,” Ramsey said. “We wanted to make sure we were putting in all the best equipment and the finest coffees for the capital of our state.”

Ramsey said that each location is run by trained baristas. “We’re fortunate to have amazing staff. They are the business. What they do every day is the business. We train pretty hard — they are amazing — great with customers, great with coffee.” Molly Martinez served VIPs at the soft opening, and she will be joined in the Harrisburg shop by two other baristas.
