Toan Ngo of Mechanicsburg
Mechanicsburg native Toan Ngo, a civilian lead data engineer for Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Business Systems Center (BSC) in Mechanicsburg, this week was awarded the 2021 Department of the Navy Information Technology Excellence Data Award to recognize his outstanding performance of duty and leadership during a two-year data integration project.
Ngo said credits his team in helping to win the DON IT Excellence Award, which honors the work on the project to consolidate two data warehouses into one for the Navy.
“I’m extremely proud of Ngo and the entire NAVSUP BSC team,” said Capt. Gene Cash, commanding officer, NAVSUP BSC. “Their tireless, innovative accomplishments continue to improve and strengthen business operations by enabling leaders to make informed data-driven decisions that increase readiness and lethality for the Navy.”
The Department of Navy Chief Information Officer Aaron Weis said the award-winning project “improved accuracy while streamlining data-integration processes for future source systems.” The project consolidated multiple business intelligence solutions within the Navy Data Platform to align it with the Navy’s “data-centric vision.”
Ngo, who works as a civilian for NAVSUP BSC, said the award was particularly special as it honors his work to follow the path of his father, who worked as a civilian at the same base for 30+ years. “He retired as a civilian last year. Graduating from college, I wanted to continue to follow in his footsteps,” Ngo said. “Growing up, I’ve always been a data guy.”
Ngo uses his data skills on the soccer field as well. He played in high school at Cumberland Valley, then at Penn State Harrisburg, and he is now the head coach for Eagle F.C. Soccer Club and assistant coach for the girls varsity soccer team at Cumberland Valley High School. He’s coached for 13 years.
“As a soccer player, you’re all stats,” Ngo said, adding that his job in data for the Navy “played into that.”
“I’m really here to lead the ship and captain the ship,” he said. “Really, the credit [for this award] goes to my dedicated staff. They are doing all the work, doing all the coding, making sure things happen. I’m making sure we meet milestones along the way.”
Ngo currently resides in Mechanicsburg with his wife Shannon and their 3-year-old daughter Isabella, who have been a huge support in his Navy and coaching careers.
