Across South Central Pennsylvania, food banks and pantries play a vital role in feeding individuals and families facing hunger. Organizations such as the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, New Hope Ministries, and Bethesda Mission distribute millions of pounds of food each year to partner agencies and neighbors in need. But their impact depends on community support — and there are many ways to help.
Donate Funds or Food: Monetary donations stretch the farthest, allowing food banks to buy in bulk and provide balanced meals. Non-perishable items like canned vegetables, rice, and peanut butter are always in demand. Check each organization’s website for most-needed items before donating.
Volunteer Your Time: From sorting food to helping at mobile pantries, volunteers are the backbone of local hunger-relief efforts. Shifts are often flexible and family-friendly.
Host a Food Drive: Schools, offices, and neighborhoods can collect food and raise awareness about local hunger issues. Themed drives — such as “breakfast foods” or “holiday meals” — are especially effective.
Advocate and Educate: Hunger is year-round. Sharing stories, supporting policies that fight food insecurity, and encouraging others to give keeps momentum strong.

This is a major hunger-relief organization serving 27 counties in central Pennsylvania. They work with over 1,100 partner agencies (pantries, shelters, meal programs) to distribute food and help with supplemental services.
Harrisburg Area Food Pantry

A frontline emergency food pantry in Dauphin County. No appointment or voucher required. Clients may receive an emergency supply once every 30 days. Open Monday-Friday from ~9:30 am to 12:30 pm, and the third Saturday of each month. Arrive early; they may have limited “choice” items when available.

Manna Food Pantry

Their “Choice Food Pantry” allows clients to select foods based on household needs — including fresh produce, dairy, and proteins. They also offer nutrition education and programming for seniors. You’ll likely need to make an appointment for the choice pantry portion. They also provide emergency food boxes if needed.
Bethesda Mission Food Bank
