Hari Jones–Hidden Histories Program: The American Civil War: A War for Freedom

February 11 @ 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Free

Though a vast majority of historians agree that the institution of slavery was what cause the war, Scott Hancock, an associate professor of History and Africana Studies at Gettysburg College, asks “Who caused the American Civil War?”

Hancock will answer this question by considering how some of the most powerless people in the antebellum United States–Black women, men, and children escaping slavery–helped cause a bitter and bloody war that eventually led to emancipation for all African Americans. His talk puts the decisions for individual freedom in a larger context of what, for Black Americans, was a war for freedom.
