Managing Editor / Writer

Harrisburg Magazine is seeking an experienced, creative, and organized Managing Editor / Writer to join our team and help shape the editorial voice of one of Central Pennsylvania’s leading lifestyle publications.

This position is ideal for a strong writer and editor who enjoys telling compelling stories, discovering interesting people and places, and staying connected to the local community. The Managing Editor / Writer will oversee the magazine’s editorial content from idea development through publication while also contributing original articles and features.

Responsibilities

• Plan, develop, assign, edit, and proofread editorial content for print and digital platforms.
• Write engaging feature stories, profiles, lifestyle articles, community stories, and other editorial content.
• Develop story ideas that are timely, relevant, and appealing to readers throughout the Harrisburg region.
• Research topics, conduct interviews, and build relationships with local business owners, community leaders, organizations, and other sources.
• Manage the editorial calendar and ensure content is completed according to production deadlines.
• Work with freelance writers, photographers, contributors, and other members of the magazine team.
• Edit submissions for accuracy, clarity, grammar, style, tone, and consistency.
• Fact-check articles and verify names, dates, locations, statistics, and other important details.
• Collaborate with the advertising and sales team to coordinate appropriate editorial and promotional content while maintaining editorial quality and integrity.
• Contribute content to the magazine’s website and social media platforms as needed.
• Identify trends, events, people, businesses, and community stories that would make compelling editorial content.
• Assist with special sections, annual issues, reader polls, and other magazine projects.
• Help maintain and strengthen the magazine’s overall editorial voice and brand.
• Perform other editorial and writing duties as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, marketing, or a related field preferred.
• Professional writing and editing experience, preferably in publishing, journalism, magazines, newspapers, digital media, or a related field.
• Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, and communication skills.
• Strong knowledge of grammar, AP style, and editorial best practices.
• Ability to conduct interviews and turn conversations into engaging stories.
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
• Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with a small team.
• Strong knowledge of the Harrisburg and Central Pennsylvania community is a plus.
• Experience with digital publishing, WordPress, social media, email marketing, or content management systems is a plus.
• Photography, basic graphic design, or multimedia experience is a plus.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable interviewing a local business owner, writing a feature story, editing a contributor’s article, developing a monthly editorial calendar, and making sure everything is ready for deadline.

You should be able to balance creativity with organization and understand that great editorial content requires both compelling storytelling and careful attention to detail.
