“In life, it seems that everyone collects something,” notes a friendly antique dealer from Crossroads Antique Mall in Hershey. For unique friends and family members that are harder to shop for, try visiting an antique shop. More often than not, you can find some great vintage versions of hobby items people love. With myself being a photographer, I know that a vintage or antique camera would be a much appreciated and beloved gift.
From millenials trying to upcycle, to history buffs looking for a new collector’s item, to eclectic souls seeking fun décor, antique shops are drawing in crowds. Not only do these market places carry unique treasures from the past, but they provide opportunities to shop for even the most difficult person.
Almost everyone who has been to an antique shop has been awe inspired at the marvelous gems that can be found; I certainly know that I have. As you slowly walk through the mazes of booths and aisles, you’ll find a wide variety of items ranging from items over 100 years old, to vintage Christmas collectables, to shabby chic handmade gifts from local purveyors. A majority of large antique shops are home to dozens of different booths run by local collectors and dealers.
With the rise of the vintage trend, antique malls are seeing more business. “We see a lot more young people coming in,” states Laurie Rhodes from Hershey’s Croassroads Antique Mall. “Engaged couples who are looking to find old items as wedding decorations a lot of times look for vases, lanterns, or the mason jars. People who are moving into a new apartment can get dishes and furniture that are actually made better, and are at a better price.”
Most shops have special sales and open houses throughout the year. These events give shoppers the chance to peruse the multiple booths set up and even interact with some of the owners.
Central Pennsylvania and the Harrisburg area boast a plethora of shops to visit. Not too far from home, try checking out a few of our top picks to find some holiday treasures for those on your list who will appreciate a unique item or two.
