This past Sunday (Sept. 4) marked the 16th annual Hanover Chili Cook Off, which is built around the PA State Chili Cooking Championship. As important as the chili is, the enormous donations garnered and then donated in the name of that spicy -- sometimes red -- cup of deliciousness proved far more significant. For the past 16 years, the Hanover Chili Cook Off has provided significant funding for a number of local nonprofit organizations that touch many lives in the Hanover area: The Guthrie Memorial Library, which registers over 24,000 patron visits monthly; The Hanover Council of Churches, which strives to serve the neediest of the community by serving over 4,000 meals every month and operating a year-round shelter for the homeless; and The HART Center, which provides a safe working environment for 150 adults with disabilities. Also on the donation list have been the Adams and York County SPCAs, the Codorus State Park Friends group, independent food banks, as well as area residents under the severe financial and emotional stress of waiting for heart transplants. This was no different; early estimates of the total amount raised for these wonderful charities is over $75,000. With over 50 chili cooks serving up there own version of chili, more than 8,000 people attended the great event, each contributing their own small portion to the many charities.
